Mental Illness mars the productivity of a student at each and every stage of life. It has become one of the commonest heard issues faced by college students and yet we are unaware of the signs and symptoms of it.

According to mental health research conducted by the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI), one in every four students have a diagnosable illness, 40% do not seek help, 80% overwhelmed by the responsibilities and 50% have become so anxious that they struggled in school. It becomes vital to recognize the signs and symptoms of mental illness at a nascent stage.

The five most common mental illness prevalent amongst college students are as follows:

1. Depression

According to the Association for University and College Counselling Centre Directions, in 2013 36.4% of college students conceded that they suffered some level of depression. Depression is a common mental illness which leaves the sufferer feeling gloomy and despondent. It gets difficult for the person to perform basic everyday tasks such as eating, sleeping, studying and working. American Psychological Association says depression in the most common mental disorder.

Symptoms include:

Physical Well-Being Symptoms- Alters sleeping patterns; sometimes leads to insomnia or oversleeping. Alters eating habits including loss of appetite or overeating.

Emotional Symptoms- Feelings of despondency, sadness, and detachment.

Thinking Symptoms- Dwelling into a spiral of negative thoughts.

2. Anxiety

There are various types of anxiety disorders such as Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD), Obsessive Compulsive Anxiety Disorder (OCD), Panic Disorder, Post-traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), Social Anxiety Disorder. Each one of us experiences stress and anxiety on a daily basis, but anxiety disorder is when anxiety interferes with the functioning of diurnal activities and causes excessive stress and fear.

Symptoms include:

  • Palpitation
  • Feelings of stress and apprehension
  • Lack of Concentration
  • Headache
  • Excessive fear and uneasiness


3. Suicide

According to the report by Center’s for Disease Control and Prevention suicide is the 10th leading cause of death in the USA. In 2013, 39,518 suicides were reported. Moreover, it has become the second leading cause of death in the United States.

Excessive feelings of guilt, despair and hopelessness can lead students to end their life. Suicides affect the family and friends of the victim.

4. Eating Disorder

Numerous students develop eating disorders during their college years. Many of the students do not even realize this disorder. Eating disorders are extreme behaviors, emotions, and attitudes surrounding food and weight perceptions.

Some common eating disorders include Anorexia Nervosa, Bulimia Nervosa, Binge Eating Disorder.


  • Constantly making excuses for eating habits
  • Distorted or poor body image
  • Feeling like eating is out of control

5. Addiction

According to the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism, approximately 25% of students who are regular drinkers face issues in their academic life. Moreover, 20% of the college students meet Alcohol use disorder criteria.

Addiction and substance abuse have become a common sight in college campuses. Dependency on alcohol or drugs is a result of being unable to deal with pressures, perils, and uncertainties of life.

Making after success is a good thing but while doing so getting mentally sick is totally unacceptable.
