Private tutions: Advantages and Disadvantages

Parents are worried that their children are unable to cope with school work. As such, they hire private tutors to coach them or send them to tuition centers for extra lessons.

Private tuitions can be advantageous. Sometimes students are unable to concentrate during lessons for various reasons, such as distractions, not feeling well or explanation gaps. Therefore, students miss key points taught during lessons. Under such circumstances, private tutors can re-explain the topics learnt, reiterate key points, abstract concept and help to solve problems that students face.

Students can be lazy at times. They may lose their motivation to work hard. The temptation for students to play is strong, particularly playing and surfing internet, spending time watching TV, sending messages and chatting with friends over the phone. Allocating times for private tuition reduces their time spent in unhealthy pursuits.

Private tutors also help to motivate the students to study hard. A private tutor can keep the students on the right track when they stray off course. Private tutors can assign homework to them, so that they can spend their time in a more meaningful way. A private tutor can thus act as a role of disciplinarian.

Having private tuition also has its disadvantages. Sometimes tutors provide additional homework on top of those given by teachers in school. The extra homework from tutor is an added burden to the students.

Private tuition can be a financial burden to parents who are poor. However, when the student is a slow learner who needs a tutor outside school, tuition is a necessary evil. Some students treat their tutors as a walking dictionary, expecting them to furnish answers to the homework given by school without thinking through the solutions by themselves over time. This can make them mentally lazy.

Jharna De private tuition is actually needed from high school and above from the competitive exam's point of view, parents try to take this advantage from a lower grade of a student due to various reasons,i believe that if the methodology of classroom teaching is well versed in schools than this extra burden on students can be avoided.

Harekrushna Behera If both teachers and students give concentration at class room then there will be no need of so called private tutors.
04 Dec at 4:31 PM
Jagadish one on one or few student coaching is possible for a tutor whereas it is difficult for a teacher in a class. no wonder, rich students hire private tutors and create all types of nuisance in class rooms and deprive the less privileged students concentrated teaching from teachers.

Subhrakanta Panda but the practical scenario sometimes demands private tution especially for some weak and shy students. for a teacher it is never possible to pay attention to each and every student and help every student in the class room.

Rameswar Prasad Patnayak We need to strengthen facilities and motive them to do their job properly. We are lacking somewhere in teaching in school for which pupils need to get private tutors.
05 Dec at 2:53 PM
Pushkar Sathe Please get real people, In India where the average teacher to student ration is more than 30, Need of private tutors is going to increase. We cant deny that it is impossible to give attention to each and every student is such a large dynamic group in classroom itself.

Anjana Goswami Yes at times private coachings are useful when the child requires individual attention, which he can not get in the class of 50 - 60 students. But at times I personally feel that if the child focus in class, then he can save a lot of time in the evening for the self study.
05 Dec at 6:35 PM
Anshuman Mahapatra private coaching are now a days mania of people thats why teachers in normal class dont give their 50% also
05 Dec at 6:38 PM
Jagadish if a student can concentrate on what teacher is explaining, there is no need of private classes. in fact, the availability of tuitions is also a reason for disturbances in classrooms
05 Dec at 6:54 PM
Manju Rawat A very gud writeup on the pros and cons of private tuitions. Sice you have elaborated both the aspects so it can very easily be concluded that it depends on the learner how he/she will consider the tuition as. A lazy and bright student must be sent to the tuition so that s/he may be regular with studies and follow up in class. for him/her the tuition is a boon as it keeps the learner on toes and alert so as to be regular with work in order to achieve better. Similarly for a slow learner who is struggling with learning gaps can find tuitions useful as it would give him/her the freedom or confidence to ask doubts so as to keep up pace with classroom learning. On the other hand learners who take studies as burden and are not inclined to learn should be under the parents'guidance for learning. If the parents can not teach atleast they can monitor what is the progress of the child. If such learners are forced to go to tuitions then they take it as an oportunity to waste some more time and have fun with friends at the tuition place. The parents in this case be very cautious watchful and understanding of their ward's tendencies before deciding to send them to tuition. Another aspect that has to be kept in mind is the reputation and the credibility of the tuition teachers or coaching institutes. It would be better if the school teachers arrange remedial class for students as I think they are more responsible and accountable for their students rather than a tuition teacher or coaching institute. It all finally depends on the nature of the learner.

Nandini Srivastava When students know there they have an option of going for tuition, they try to avoid paying attention in class. When we were students, we did not have this kind of options to fall back upon, so we devoted all our energies to study and score well. I do agree, that with commercialization of education, many teachers refuse to teach sincerely in the class, so that kids come to them for tuitions.
06 Dec at 9:02 AM
Nandini Srivastava My 27 years as a teacher has taught me one thing, that no child is average or weak. It is just a question of igniting their interest, so that the fire of learning starts raging inside them.
06 Dec at 9:11 AM
Nandini Srivastava God has gifted most of us with the same level of intelligence, except maybe special kids. It is upto us how best we use them Research has shown that in our entire lifetime, we use only 7 to 8 % of our total intelligence. Even a person like Einstein had used only about 9 to 10% of his total intelligence. So when god is so generous in giving all of us a higher level of IQ, why do we need to label kids as average, below average etc.? Even a smile or a" Good" comment from a teacher sincerely given is enough to motivate a kid to do his best.

Dr Arjun Y Pangannav Private tutions are needed only to the students who lagged behind in learning and doing cources as external candidates. It is not necessary to those students who are studying in the exellent schools/colleges that are imparting good quality education and collecting huge amount of fees and donations, it is their duty provide such qualititive service. If the private tutors are Govt/Aided School/college teachers, the spoil the institution as well as system.

Saramma Johnson Nowadays tuitions become a fashion to some parents they send their child to tuition when the child become 2 years old. Child is not allowed to play. Parents want the child should become as they wish. School and tution . very load to children. They dont think about children's capacity or child's wish. I suggest give freedom to child's choice.Let them think what they want to be. Reduce the burden of children. Give them chance to take breath.
