Dealing with Argumentative Students

What is an argument?

When we hear the word argument, the first thing that strikes our mind is the heated debates, courtroom battles between lawyers, and noisy disagreements between people holding different opinions and views.

But, that’s not it! It is not just conflicts of the viewpoints of people. Anything, that is valid, well presented, clear and help resolve conflicts is an argument. It is not just necessarily verbal and presented through words. It can be presented in written.

Every teacher knows how critical a task it is to develop the smooth running of a class. It can be difficult to teach 25 or more students of mixed ability, background, and temperament with different arguments on different subjects/topics and build a cooperative and encouraging relationship with them. Certain kinds of student behavior make that task even more challenging. But, the fact is that even the most difficult classroom personalities respond to positive discipline.

How can the teacher deal with a child who becomes argumentative upon confrontation?

  • Stay calm
  • Tell the student ‘I don’t appreciate that tone/behavior’ if he/she is crossing the limits
  • Avoid being ‘Offensive’
  • Point out what is wrong about the situation in a clear, firm, non-condescending manner
  • Evaluate the situation that led to the confrontation
  • Do not make threats that cannot be carried out
  • Give the child an opportunity to speak his/her piece
  • Do not back the student into a corner. Leave room for options
  • If you made an error, admit it!

Dr. Ramlal Porika Arguments will exhibit the importance of the learning process. But It should result in outcome.
21 Jan at 6:00 PM
Surfaraz Ansari when a student is argumentive we must listen to a student what he want to expell or explain. if he is not in a a way then when a lovable tone we must help him to set all things right.if he right then we must encourage him but also explain that the way her approach is not correct but he may use a right way to put his argument in front of any one.we only can make them how to behave in a positive way or in a negative way.allow each and every student to get his query solve but in a systematic way.teacher must be aware of all the issue and problem being faced by a students. sometime may be problem of his family friend circle or any may make him rude or argumentative. we all must reply wiht a love to him or her to be satisfied and must realised that what he doing not correct ,
21 Jan at 6:07 PM
Piyush Joshi listen to him and find what are his views about the situation, realise him where he is wrong and than gives your views and options to him. Give him some time to think, and please don't shout all the time.
21 Jan at 8:18 PM
Neelima Joshi deal them emotionally and give logic in favour of your thoughts, but at the same time listen to him also.
21 Jan at 8:27 PM
Brajesh If a student making argument , we must leave situation towards until its not going in a very positive way
21 Jan at 8:39 PM
Sunita Shukla Argument is must for learning as it has to be heard and resolved with attention towards Students Problem.
21 Jan at 9:37 PM
Harekrushna Behera Stay calm- correct behavior. But I like those students who are argumentative but not too much to keep a break the class.
22 Jan at 8:16 AM
Deepak M you are true sir if we standing calm they will come to normal condition. Because silence is the best weapon.
22 Jan at 9:11 AM
Dr Arjun Y Pangannav Teacher's behaviour and his treatment to students play a vital role. There is much truth in saying "as you sow so you reap" Students are the best judges of teachers. They try to react according to teachers behaviour in class-room, campus and in the society. Teacher's sociability with students decides the result from the students. A well disciplined teachers rarely come accross suct unwanted happenings in the class.
22 Jan at 10:21 AM
Anita Kapoor arguments are necessary in the class, but not too much
22 Jan at 11:01 AM
Prasita Bhat I agree to Dr.Arjun's views. Students try to react according to teacher's behaviour in class. A teacher can motivate a child if he or she keeps the child motivated.. Be appreciative towards the child not antagonistic towards him.
22 Jan at 11:13 AM
Nandini Srivastava Such students waste the time of the class and set a bad precedent/ example for others. Fashionable schools today, do not give the teacher the authority to send them out of the class.. So what does the teacher do?
22 Jan at 11:19 AM
Rameswar Prasad Patnayak Students need to be argumentative in case of doubt. Most of the times they don't ask questions because of fear of being recognized among the class and some times because of the fear of teacher also. So in these cases teacher should be the one to take the first step and bridge the gap between him/her and the pupil.
22 Jan at 2:00 PM
Sujit Kumar Sahoo Argument is the way to find out the solution after discussing each and every path.
22 Jan at 4:13 PM
Sujit Kumar Sahoo Argument has some adverse effect too.specially when nobody ready to accept anyone's thinking.
22 Jan at 4:16 PM
Sudha Ashok Argument fo the sake of argument is not good.
22 Jan at 4:27 PM
Sudha Ashok It should not be encouraged within the class room.If a student has a valid point, then he can be called elsewhere
22 Jan at 4:29 PM
Shashi Argumentative students are found in every age group and a teacher needs to understand the gravity of the argument. If it adds to the content it should be encouraged but if it points to an attention seeker than a tuoch on shoulder or smile would be enough.
22 Jan at 6:46 PM
Piyush Joshi a good teacher should use above points they are really helpful in dealing argumentative students.
22 Jan at 7:30 PM
Brajesh Sometimes it can be very hardly when we handle argument ative students but we have to stay calm down in this type condition..
22 Jan at 8:07 PM
Neelima Joshi if the situation is uncontrolable than leave as it is for some time, better to leave the class.
22 Jan at 8:11 PM
Neelima Joshi ask another person to go and talk them to control the situatiuon.
22 Jan at 8:12 PM
Sunita Shukla Difference of opinion also gives rise to argument as We know that any class room can't escape debate or heated discussion on any topic, provided it should be healthy .
22 Jan at 8:22 PM
Harekrushna Behera Teacher has to understand that this type of student has also a positive point of research bent of mind.
23 Jan at 8:03 AM
Nandini Srivastava Most kids start arguing with the teacher in order to disrupt the class. This is very unhealthy as the teacher has time constraints on her to complete the syllabus on time. These attention -seeking tricks need to be discouraged by the school, instead of coming down hard on their own teachers, who have so many deadlines to meet.
23 Jan at 9:07 AM
Brajesh Point out what is wrong about the situation in a clear, firm, non-condescending manner.. Sometimes it is work better..
23 Jan at 1:36 PM
Piyush Joshi by politeness and smiles helps in their brainwash, then they can listen you.
23 Jan at 4:21 PM
Sameer Shukla Argument may be of two types one constructive and other time wasting. We have to bring student towards constructive one to avoid any nuisance.
23 Jan at 10:47 PM
Harish Teacher can do everything to the students, the matter is that how your behavior to the students.
24 Jan at 10:06 AM
Padmini There can be two kind of communications- Arguements and Discussion, therew is a very slight difference between both, but one should understnad that very well..
24 Jan at 5:17 PM
Piyush Joshi in hindi there is a famous quote " Chhama baran ko chaiye -- chotan ko utpat" means elders have to forgive always while younger supposed to be naughty all the time.
24 Jan at 11:05 PM
Nandini Srivastava There is something called DISCIPLINE which needs to be maintained in a classroom. One cannot afford to be forgiving all the time, as one is taken as a SOFTIE.
25 Jan at 9:01 AM
Harekrushna Behera Proper delegation, participation, involvement, activities reduce unnecessary arguments.
25 Jan at 1:13 PM
Suchitra Pareekh It is important to step into the space of the student have a ppep into his/her mind before labeling the reaction/response as argument. Today when teachers are expected to provide learning environment for all types of students learning needs and ways there is no practical learning given to the teachers for behaviour observation, mind patterns, interpersonal behaviour and lot more in these areas.
26 Jan at 12:59 AM
Mayank Kumar Totally agree with Suchitra ... teachers need to access the behavior of each student independently ...Each child is different.
26 Jan at 10:27 AM
Tatiana Dubovets Unfortunately, i think we need more tips on that
26 Jan at 12:37 PM
Piyush Joshi it's realy patetic situation....use sixth sense to overcome from it.
26 Jan at 11:29 PM
Nikhat we need to have patience when we are teaching.we should understand the students.
27 Jan at 12:54 AM
Harekrushna Behera Personal dealing is needed. May be he is an intelligent student and needs help in presenting the ideas.
27 Jan at 8:12 AM
Fatimafarhana Being a teacher we can go through the chld psychology and we should try to understand what is the problem than why the child is arguing.
27 Jan at 5:35 PM
Fatimafarhana Try to solve the problm so that a child can concentra on studies
27 Jan at 5:36 PM
Dr Arjun Y Pangannav Serve with love and handle with care.
28 Jan at 9:45 AM
Deepasikha Mishra If a student making argument , we must leave situation towards until its not going in a very positive way
28 Jan at 10:10 AM
Sameer Shukla Yes sometimes it becomes very hot in the class room and Teacher has to deal with mild nature and affection as this is the first tool to be applied.
29 Jan at 4:32 PM
Harekrushna Behera An argument has a positive direction also. A teacher has to channelize this in the right track.
29 Jan at 5:48 PM

01 Feb at 10:42 AM
Brajesh In a critical situation or argumentive situation first we have to calm down, if we left this type situation sometimes definitely we will out of same situation..
03 Feb at 1:25 PM
Sunil Kumar Good enough.
05 Feb at 12:34 PM
Sunny Kushwaha good
06 Feb at 1:42 PM
Priyank Jain nice article agreed with it.....................
09 Feb at 11:16 AM
Beeren Sahu yes every teacher has to face such situation many times......but i feel it all depends how a teacher leads his/her class
18 Feb at 2:55 PM
