Noted writer and academician Panmana Ramachandran Nair passes away


Noted writer and academician Prof. Panmana Ramachandran Nair, considered to be a beacon of Malayalam language, passed away tonight at his residence here following old age related illness. He was 86.

Nair was in poor health for the past few days, his family members said. Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan and State Minister for Culture A K Balan condoled the death of Nair.

Nair, also a critic, translator and scholar, taught at seven colleges during his 27-year long teaching career before retiring as head of the department of Malayalam at the University College here in 1987.

He had served in the committees of the Kerala Sahitya Academy, Kerala Kalamandalam and Sahitya Pravarthaka Sahakarana Sangham. Nair has authored 20 books, including five books on the correct usage of Malayalam language.

He was also the recipient of Lifetime Achievement Award for his contribution to language and literature instituted by the Kerala Sahitya Academy.
